What are dentures?
It is a removable device made to replace all or only few missing teeth in your mouth; it can be made for the upper or lower jaws. It consists of false teeth closely matching your appearance attached to a plastic base made of pink colored acrylic material closely matching the gums of your jaws.
Complete Dentures
There are two types: Conventional and immediate.
Why complete denture?
If you have lost all the teeth in an arch, you may be able to replace them with a complete denture, restoring those teeth’ functionality. Dentures made now seem far more natural than they were made in the past. Dentures may assist in restoring your smile as well as your self-confidence, all while contributing to an improvement in your quality of life.
How Do They Feel?
Until the muscles of the cheeks and tongue learn to maintain them in position and you become used to inserting and retrieving them, your new dentures may feel strange or loose for the first few weeks. It’s also normal for your mouth to produce more saliva and experience some little discomfort or pain.
What is the difference between conventional and immediate dentures?
- Conventional denture: They are made after teeth have been extracted in the past and the gum tissue has already healed nicely.
- Immediate dentures are prepared ahead of time so they may be placed immediately after tooth extraction. Therefore, the patient would not be toothless while their gums heal after extraction. Consequently, they should only be considered an interim alternative until traditional dentures can be created.
Partial dentures
Unlike complete dentures which require replacing all teeth in the upper or lower jaw, Partial dentures replace only one or more missing teeth in the upper or lower jaw.
It entails the connection of fake teeth to a pink-colored resin base, like the gums in your mouth or a metal base in certain circumstances. It may contain metal, transparent or gum-colored clips like attachments known as clasps to get support from other natural teeth.
Types of partial dentures
Acrylic partial denture (Temporary plate/Stay plate/Flipper): In this type of denture, your dentist will replace teeth onto the pink color plastic base made of acrylic. This type of plate also have silver clasp to get support from other natural teeth. This plate should be used as a temporary option.
Pros of Acrylic Partial Plates:
- The price is relatively low
- The time it takes to make acrylic dentures is shorter than that of cast metal or flexible dentures.
- Allows for easier denture repairs
Cons of Acrylic Partial Plates:
- The acrylic foundation is often weaker and more vulnerable to breaking, requiring the acrylic to be thicker which makes this denture very uncomfortable to wear
- Covers large area of your mouth
- It may take long time to get used to
- May cause more gagging
Metal partial denture
It is a typical form of the partial plate in which replacement teeth are placed on a metal framework base. It may be coated with pink plastic to conceal the metal’s color and to make it aesthetically pleasant. They are constructed from a thin, light cobalt-chromium alloy, increasing their durability and strength. These plates are an excellent long-term option that may survive for many years if adequately maintained. Metal partials are robust and sturdier than other partials.
Pros of Metal Partial Plates:
- Lightweight causes minimal discomfort and irritation as it is well adapted to your jaws
- Improved comfort resulted from better fit and support
- Enhances flavor and feeling while eating. They can withstand high temperatures, and provide a natural feel
Cons of Metal Partial Plates:
- The expensive alloy used in metal acrylic partial dentures makes it relatively more expensive
- Fabrication takes longer than acrylic partial
- It may not be aesthetically pleasing because of silver metal structure and silver clasps
- Some people may find it challenging to place into their mouth, particularly those with poor fine motor skills.
Flexible Partial Denture:
These may be a comfortable plates and visually acceptable solution for people sensitive to cast metal or acrylic owing to their hypoallergenic materials. Flexible plates are composed of genuine nylon-looking material and are long-lasting if adequately cared for and cleaned. They are appreciated for their comfort and adaptability. They look to be quite realistic.
Pros of Flexible Partial Denture:
- Improved comfort
- Fabrication time is frequently reduced, and many try-ins are avoided.
- Denture flexibility provides increased strength, rendering them more excellent impact resistant.
- Are resistant to odors and stains
Cons of Flexible Partial Denture:
- Higher cost
- Adding teeth in existing denture, repair, relining and rebasing may be very challenging
