How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening works by using hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to break apart the molecules that discolor teeth, ultimately resulting in a brighter, whiter smile.

Teeth Whitening Methods

There are two methods for whitening your teeth: at-home and in-office procedures.

At-Home Teeth Whitening

At-home teeth whitening involves taking an imprint of your upper and lower teeth, creating custom bleaching trays from your teeth mold, and providing you with trays, a whitening kit, and instructions on how to use them at home.

In-Office Teeth Whitening

In-office teeth whitening involves polishing the teeth with a pumice polishing solution, placing a cheek retractor into the jaw, applying a gauze pad to keep the teeth dry, applying a barrier to protect the gums, administering a special gel containing hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to the front surface of the teeth, and obtaining the desired shade through two to three 15–30-minute sessions. Fluoride is then applied to the teeth to reduce sensitivity, and the gel is washed away to prevent gum irritation.
