Nitrous Oxide Sedation Dentistry (Offered in our office for Kids and Adults)

Nitrous oxide, also known as “laughing gas,” is the most common type of sedation used in dentistry. It is a sweet-smelling gas that you breathe through a nose mask. With nitrous oxide, you will still have control of your bodily functions and will be able to converse, but may experience mild amnesia and may fall asleep. Nitrous oxide is safe for children and adults, people with asthma, and women who are nursing. However, it is not recommended for those with nasal obstruction, pregnancy, or pulmonary disease such as COPD or respiratory infections.

Oral Sedation Dentistry ( Offered in our office for Adults only, not for kids)

Oral sedation involves taking a medication, such as Triazolam or Lorazepam, one hour before your appointment. This type of sedation can range from mild to moderate and may cause relaxation, sleepiness, and mild amnesia after the appointment. An escort is required to bring you to your appointment and to accompany you home, as you cannot drive a vehicle yourself to or from the appointment.

IV Sedation (Not offered in our office)

IV sedation is the fastest-acting sedation treatment, but it is not commonly used in general dentistry. It is administered through the veins and induces a state of deep relaxation. IV sedation is commonly used during third molar or wisdom tooth removal surgeries at the oral surgeon’s office. It is a great option for children who may require extensive dental work, those with severe dental anxiety, and patients with medical conditions that make dental treatment more difficult.
